Is My Rabbit Scared of Me? How to Build Trust with Your Bunny

One of the saddest questions I hear is: "Is my rabbit scared of me?" Usually, the answer isn't as bad as people think.

Remember - Rabbits Are Prey Animals
Rabbits survive by being cautious. Everything bigger than them could potentially be dangerous.
Including us. Imagine if a giant reached down from the sky to pick you up. You'd probably be nervous too!
Some Rabbits Need More Time
Not every rabbit grows up the same way. Some are handled from birth; others may have had very little human interaction. Rescue rabbits sometimes have difficult histories that make trusting people harder. That doesn't mean they can't learn to trust... it simply takes patience.
Let Your Rabbit Come to You
One of the best ways to build trust is surprisingly simple.
Lay on the floor.
Don't chase your rabbit.
Don't constantly reach for them.
Just let them investigate you.
Hand-feeding small treats is another wonderful way to build positive associations.
Not Every Rabbit Likes Being Held
This surprises many new owners. Some rabbits absolutely hate being picked up. That doesn't mean they don't love you. Many would much rather sit beside you than in your arms. Respecting their personality often builds trust much faster!
Other Ways to Bond
If your rabbit dislikes being picked up, try:
Sitting on the floor together.
Gentle petting.
Hand-feeding treats.
Letting them climb on you.
Talking softly.
Over time, many rabbits become much more confident.
When Fear Is Sudden
If your rabbit suddenly becomes fearful after previously being friendly, consider:
Illness
Pain
A stressful event
Changes in the home
If their behavior changes dramatically, it's worth speaking with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.
Final Thoughts
Trust isn't built overnight. Every rabbit is different. Some become lap rabbits. Others simply enjoy sitting nearby. Both are perfectly normal. Be patient, move at your rabbit's pace, and remember:
The strongest bonds are built when your bunny chooses to come to you - not because they're forced to!
