Have you ever watched your rabbit rub their chin across your furniture, toys, or even your shoes?
Congratulations… You've just been claimed.

What Is Chinning?
Rabbits have scent glands underneath their chin. When they rub that area against an object, they're leaving behind an invisible scent marker. This behavior is called chinning.
Why Do Rabbits Chin?
They're marking territory. It's their way of saying: "This belongs to me."
Unlike urine spraying or territorial droppings, humans can't smell these scent glands. So, while your rabbit thinks they've claimed your chair… You'll never notice a thing.
What Do Rabbits Chin?
Pretty much everything.
I've seen rabbits chin:
Food bowls
Toys
Furniture
Hidey houses
People's shoes
Blankets
Carrier doors
New objects are especially exciting.
Is Chinning Bad?
Not at all. It's completely harmless and perfectly normal. If anything, it's kind of adorable once you know what they're doing!
Final Thoughts
Chinning is one of the cutest rabbit behaviors. Your bunny isn't being strange…They're simply telling the world, "Mine!"
