Why Do Rabbits Thump? What Your Bunny Is Trying to Tell You

If you've ever heard a loud THUMP! come from across the room, your rabbit is trying to tell you something. Rabbits communicate in many ways, and thumping is one of their loudest.

What Is Thumping?

A rabbit thumps by lifting one (or sometimes both) of their back feet and stomping it firmly against the ground.

Wild rabbits use this behavior to warn other rabbits that danger may be nearby. Your pet rabbit still has this instinct today.

Why Do Rabbits Thump?

Common reasons include:

  • They're startled.

  • They hear a strange noise.

  • They're annoyed.

  • They're frustrated.

  • They don't like something you've done.

  • They're trying to warn you.

Some rabbits even thump after coming home from the veterinarian or after being picked up when they didn't want to be.

Can Rabbits Thump When Excited?

Surprisingly, yes. I've even seen rabbits thump after hearing the treat bag open! Sometimes they're simply overwhelmed with excitement. Learning your rabbit's body language will help you understand what they're trying to communicate.

Should I Be Worried?

Occasional thumping is perfectly normal. However, frequent thumping without an obvious cause may suggest your rabbit feels stressed or uncomfortable. Try to identify what they're reacting to.

Final Thoughts

Thumping is your rabbit's way of communicating. Sometimes they're warning you. sometimes they're expressing frustration. Sometimes they're simply saying, "Hey! I don't like this!" The better you know your rabbit, the easier it becomes to understand what they're trying to say.
