Why Does My Rabbit Lick Me? Understanding Bunny Kisses

One of the sweetest moments you can experience as a rabbit owner is when your bunny suddenly starts licking your hand, arm, or even your nose. Many people immediately wonder: "Why is my rabbit licking me?" The answer is usually a very good one.

Bunny Kisses Mean Affection

Rabbits are incredibly social animals. When two bonded rabbits live together, they spend a lot of time grooming one another. Grooming strengthens their bond and shows trust, affection, and companionship.

When your rabbit licks you, they're often treating you like another rabbit. In other words… Your bunny thinks you're family.

Many rabbit owners affectionately call these little licks "bunny kisses."

Is It Really Because of Salt?

There's a common myth that rabbits only lick people because they like the salt on our skin. Personally, after many years of raising and boarding rabbits, I don't believe that's the whole story. I've watched bonded rabbits groom each other constantly, even when there isn't any "salt" involved.

In my experience, rabbits lick because it's one of the primary ways they show affection. If your bunny licks you, I see it as a sign of trust more than anything else.

Sometimes They'll Groom You Back

Have you ever been petting your rabbit and suddenly they turn around and start licking your hand? I absolutely love when this happens!

Many rabbits have favorite scratching spots, especially around their lower back or just above the tail.

After you've groomed them for a while, they'll often groom you in return. I like to think of it as their way of saying, "Thank you."

Licking vs. Nipping

Licking and nipping aren't quite the same thing. A lick is soft and gentle. A nip is a tiny pinch that usually doesn't break the skin.

Young rabbits often nip simply because they're curious or exploring with their mouths. Sometimes a rabbit will even give a tiny nip followed immediately by several licks. Don't panic. They're usually just communicating!

Not Every Rabbit Licks

Some rabbits are incredibly affectionate. Others prefer to show love by simply lying beside you or asking for pets. If your rabbit never licks you, that doesn't mean they don't love you... Every bunny has their own personality.

Final Thoughts

Rabbit kisses are one of my favorite parts of owning bunnies. Whether your rabbit gives you one tiny lick or spends several minutes grooming your hand, they're usually showing trust and affection. If your bunny has decided you're worth grooming, consider yourself very lucky - you've probably become part of their family.
